I only entered the blogosphere in late 2005 after realizing that I was missing out on an important part of the whole "online communication" genre. As I had been busy managing forums, web sites, and writing articles, I soon realized that I could firm up my two niches – aviation and article writing – by blogging on these topics regularly. With that in mind, I soon launched a pair of blogs and I am very happy with my decision. I selected Word Press as I believe that they offer one of the best blogging communities out there. Are you a blogger? If not, why not?

My decision to go with Word Press and not with one of the other big blogging entities such as Blogger, had everything to do with my having complete control over the site. Since I host with Powweb, I discovered that my web hosting company offers over thirty different software downloads for its members. Word Press and a few other blogging entities are represented, but I selected Word Press due to the recommendation of a friend.

Within two or three minutes of my download, I had Word Press up and running. In less than thirty minutes, I had the layout I wanted, although I kept the traditional template in place as I knew I wanted to work on my content first and on the design later. Next, I updated the links on my two related sites to reflect a "Blog" tab. In addition, I picked a few places within each site to announce the new blogs and I emailed everyone on my members list to inform them of my entrance into the world of blogs.

If you select Word Press as your blogging platform, you will soon discover that Version 2.0 was recently released. Because I am new to blogging, I haven't yet updated from my downloaded version, 1.5. I want to first make certain that Word Press has worked out any kinks that may be in the updated version. In addition, not all the plug-ins you can use [there are plenty of them] with 1.5 are compatible with 2.0 just yet. Most are, but some still are not.

Beyond the update issues, I enjoy using the administrative "dashboard" which allows me to create each blog. Because I include pictures with one of my blogs, Jet Movements, I also have to make certain that the HTML I use to put each picture in its place [alignment] is exact. Word Press allows for you to do that.

In addition, I like the fact that Word Press allows administrators to schedule their entries. You can blog today, but schedule your submission to appear online at an appointed time several days away. Since much of my writing inspiration comes in bunches, I often will tackle several days worth of entries at once and spread them out over the coming week. If I want to later change the timing of an entry or squeeze in a separate one, I can do that too.

Word Press is current with today's web standards and looks much cleaner and professional than some of its competitors. You can change the template over to one that is in the Word Press arsenal or design a template yourself and upload it to your site instead.

Yes, Word Press is designed to be set up through your own web host, but if you do not have a web site, you can get a free account through Web Press and they will host it for you.

Although Word Press is an "open source" community, meaning it is derived from and driven by volunteers, they have an active forum and many helpful links to assist you with building and maintaining your own blog.

Obviously, I am a very satisfied Word Press customer. You can be  a satisfied blogger too whether you select Word Press through your web host or host your blog directly with them.

After i purchased phpLD ( phplinkdirectory script) , inside the phpLD forum itself and also at Digital Point and other places, i noticed even though there were several directory owners, very few had a proper idea how they would present their directory to the people they were going to attract - the visitors. About at least 40% of the people had a single question in mind - what categories they were going to create and how ? As i had mentioned before, finding and buying the directory script was the easy part, as every second webmaster was building a directory .

In my opinion .... one of the major reasons so many members are building directories is simply to get more backlinks , reciprocal links or in other words SEO optimisation purposes . It is by now a well known fact that Directories are often easily crawled , especially if they are SEO friendly like phpLD. Some of the Directory owners also make it big by getting good PR and even getting enough submissions and promotions begin to charge money for the submissions. But in my opinion , a directory would primarily be built for making the web surfing / browsing easier for the novice or general visitor . There are by now millions and millions of websites and web pages, blogs, forums , article repository, services and products available on the web and the search engines like Google, yahoo , MSN and many others are undoubtedly making sure that they unearth new sites every day. However, as we painfully find out that just indexing the pages hardly makes it any easier for the surfer, due to various unethical SEO and spamming processes. Hence the directories .... but not just directories, but a well categorized directory, so that the user can easily and without any tricks manage to find exactly what they wish to find should be the objective .

Unless a web directory has a proper categorization , or a proper theme in mind, it is simply not worth making the directory. As a webmaster , we are doing our duty to educate and aid the layman visitor, but unless we ourselves are not educated enough, should we be attempting it ? As I had mentioned earlier , several wannabe directory owners ( mind you i am not saying I am a master :P by a long shot ), ask around the question of what categories should they be creating in their directory and often they are even ready to buy complete category structure of another directory or even custom categories ( I might get flamed for this, lol ) . If this was the case, why not simply use the DMOZ RDF dump, like many many other sites, which is available for free ?

If I may say so, what role are we playing as directory owners, if we are buying the software to create the directory base, buying the category structure and probably even buying links ... and keep on cloning one General Directory with another? In my opinion, if we are going to build web directories, we should best be building niche directories with niche and detailed to detailed categories as much possible and trying to promote them and collecting links the hard way ... by hand . If you dont have a idea, the least one can do is choose a section from DMOZ and carry forward on its branches of sub categories and list as many sites as you can and request other websites of that particular genre to submit to your directory . Maybe in this way , we will be able to actually share the load out of the search engines and continue to profit even as every other directory will be having its own importances.

DMOZ truly is not a bad place to start, as it is undoubtedly very neatly categorized with appropiate descriptions , and rules for each individual sub category , which can be implemented on our own sites a well. I have been creating categories for my own directory  and still I feel I am not even 15% through in creating branches to accomodate every kind of site which can fall under Entertainment ; and have also noticed, I think Anon (our phpLD mod) has a real estate directory with over 2,550,000 categories David ( phpLD owner ), if I am not wrong has a Directory for Dance related websites. Maybe these can give a example of what i have tried to rant about in the above passage .

  Drawbacks to Ebay selling are:

 Finding/making a profitable product
 Can be time consuming (Plan to spend 20-30 hrs/week)
 Very competitive market


2.  Drop-ship- Drop-shipping is very similar- however the advantage to drop-shipping is that you don't have to worry about moving the products yourself.  With drop-shipping you're really working as a third party in the sense that you find vendor's who'll drop-ship, and when you make a sale, they deliver the products directly to the customer for you-thus, no inventory or overhead costs?  It can also save you the money and hassle of running to UPS every month to send/receive shipments.  Another perk is that you don't have to buy the product before you sell it!  You simply take the order and give it to the manufacturer for shipping, and you receive a check, without having bought a thing.  I know I make this sound pretty easy but in fact it takes an adequate amount of information gathering in order find hot products.  The first thing you will need to obtain is a drop-ship directory in order to find vendors who drop-ship, it will cost you anywhere from $55-85, but the money you spend will more than pay you back in safety and time.  The only source I recommend for directories is WorldWide again because their the only vendor directory provider that's Ebay certified-there's a lot of fakes out their posing as drop-ship providers who are really just "middlemen" trying to collect a commission.
                 
              Drawbacks to drop-shipping are:
 
It can be extremely time-consuming finding reputable vendors with profitable products that will work with drop-shippers. 
Backorders and returns can be a headache if you're with a bad vendor. 


3.  E-trading is a trend growing more in popularity everyday.  Right now the biggest e-trading market is Forex (Foreign Exchange Market) which has a higher turnover rate than the U.S. equity market.  Foreign currency trading is a VERY lucrative market and involves simultaneously buying and selling currency online.  Transactions take place OTC (Over the Counter) or via internet/phone, as there is no centralized location for trade such as with the stock or futures markets.  Not only does Forex offer trading tutorials and conferences for you to learn to trade, but they also allow novice traders to get a taste of the market by allowing you to begin trading with as little as a $25 investment.  Forex trading time is short in nature as it does not require long periods of holding before trading as with stocks or bonds.  Actually 85% of all currency transactions last around a week or less.  A great benefit of trading with Forex is that you aren't charged commissions or exchange fees.  They also offer "real time" price quotes. 4.   MLM and Direct Selling business opportunities in my opinion are the most misrepresented and underestimated income opportunities on the web.  Most of this is due to false and misleading claims about products/services and income potential made by shady distributors and sales associates.  Multi-Level Marketing or (MLM) companies are organizations that provide a product or service and market it by "word of mouth" advertising or paying independent distributors to sell the products as oppose to paid advertising i.e., radio, TV, newspaper.  These distributors sell the products and receive commissions; however the majority of the money is made by "referring" or bringing in more distributors, who then bring in more distributors, and so on.  The key to these businesses is to find established and legit companies with good commission structures and not spend time and money on small, "fly by night" corporations.  Direct Selling is really in essence MLM (even though they try hard to distinguish themselves) except the products that are usually sold are "higher ticket" or more expensive products.  Direct selling allows you to make more money with fewer recruits because you have higher commissions.  Both of these opportunities are for people who desire and motivation to "run their own business", because once you recruit people in under you, you have to teach them how to do the same, it's called the process of "duplication" which involves duplicating the work habits of successful individuals and teaching others to do the same.  Income is unlimited and residual, so even when you retire from the business (realistically anywhere from 2-4 years) you'll still receive checks!  An initial investment is required for both opportunities in order to purchase the products and/or start-up kit so if your not looking to invest anywhere between $50-250 for an MLM or at least $500-2k for Direct Selling maybe these businesses aren't for you.

                 Drawbacks:

With so many un-established companies on the internet its hard to discern what companies are paying real people real money, so do your research before pulling out your credit card.
There is a high drop out rate in MLM's due to lack of adequate training from the recruiter/upline and or motivation on the recruits part, so choose your upline carefully because some members will recruit you then leave you on the corner.
Direct selling is bit more challenging due to the type of products/services being offered.  It's more challenging to sell due to the fact that a lot of people who are looking for a business are doing so because cash is tight, so most of them don't have a grand to invest in order to start (believe me I know).


5.   Last but not least we have Affiliate programs.  Affiliate programs are perfect for people who don't want to sell their own product, don't want to talk to people on the phone or in person, and/or don't want to spend a lot of money.  An affiliate is someone who advertises a company's services/products on their site by placing banners/ads of the company's site on their website.  When the organization makes a sale from your website link, and in some cases even a referral from the affiliate's site, the affiliate receives a commission.  Affiliate marketing is inexpensive to start because 99% of the companies don't charge you to become an affiliate, and why should they?  I mean after all you're bringing them visitors, which turns into more sales revenue.  You don't have to have your own site to be an affiliate, but it is necessary if you're looking to attract more visitors and make more money.  The key is joining a good handful of affiliate programs so that you can create multiple streams of income, that's how top affiliates earn thousands/week.
 
               Drawbacks: 
              
It can be challenging finding quality affiliate programs to join.  Many companies claim to "have the best" program.
If you don't have traffic, what's the point? It's better if you actually KNOW HOW to bring traffic to websites.  Many affiliates make money due to the fact that they don't know how to market their programs.

 

Not enough???  Well try thinking out of the box.  Most successful online marketers created income by simply finding a need or a solution for a product/service.  For example, while vacationing in Colorado a few years ago I came across a guy who'd made millions simply by creating a website/lead capture page that surveyed people who were searching for real estate.  The page, he stated, basically was a questionnaire collecting information about their requirements:  price range, number of rooms, location, etc.  After receiving the information from the site, he then sold their information as leads to mortgage companies and real estate agents in those local areas!  This can be a very profitable business venture because real estate agents are always on the hunt for warm leads.  You can even apply this to any other business where leads are sought after.   

Don't let drawbacks discourage you!!  All of these strategies are viable and the most commonly used ways to make money online.  You just have to have believe that you can be successful-besides what business doesn't have its drawbacks?  See you at the top!!!

6. Write once per week special projects. These are a series of articles on a particular topic. You will be offering it once per week giving readers a week to comment on it, then have them hanging on for next weeks special post in the series. Each time add links to previous posts in that series.

7. Using your content from your other websites or blogs is also a great way to get more pageviews for all of them. Use the target new tag and refer to material on your other blogs and websites. It will open a new window leaving the current blog open while they visit your other website or blog. You can quickly double up your pageviews while also introducing your readers to your other websites and blogs.

8. Make a list of 10 previous posts and the links to those posts. Make a post in your blog about 10 things you want your readers to know and read in case they have not done so before. At your suggestion they will at least go see if they have read those posts before, increasing your pageviews once again plus bringing old material to new readers. That also lets them know they should browse the archives for things they have missed.

9. Using that same list of 10 posts or a new one, visit other blogs on your topic. Find posts that talk about something similar to one of those 10 posts, then instead of adding a link in your signature to the home page, make a comment there and refer to the post that is similar and that contains helpful information to that blogger and their readers. You will also be increasing your link popularity while doing this. Do not spam the link. Make sure it actually contains useful information. Don't be trolls or spammers and you will end up with new readers and more page views for your blog.

10. Do not stop being creative. Use the tips in this article, plus invent some of your own ways to interlink your blogposts together. Create pages. Don't just post and forget. As an article directory owner and editor I am exposed to a huge number of articles every single day of the week.
I sometimes receive complaints from authors who are angered by the fact that their article has not been published, which leads me to believe that there are still a lot of people out there who do not understand article marketing, nor the role that directories play.
For those who are not finding success with articles, or for those considering starting out, here are a few ground rules that will save you a lot of work in the long run and will likely get your article marketing career off to a much more auspicious start.
Read the article directory's specific terms of service and guidelines. This may seem like a boring, tedious and long winded waste of your valuable time but in the long term it will save you hours of frustration and wasted effort. All directories set their own rules and some are stricter than others. Most directories labor under a huge number of submissions and the work of sifting through them is often the job of one individual. This means that if your opening paragraph or introductory statement is poorly written or contains mistakes, that is as far as the editor will go before hitting the delete key. The luxury of time to edit an author's mistakes or to decline an article as opposed to deleting it, is one that most editors do not have.
Mass submissions are usually viewed as spam. Let's face it, none of us are capable of writing over 200 articles in a day - I would say that even producing more than ten would be a pretty amazing feat of productivity. It should come as no surprise to those submitting large numbers of articles in a 24 hour period to find that they are all deleted. Article directory software usually allows for quick erasure of such submissions, so if you don't want your work to fall victim to mass deletion, don't mass submit. All that is needed is a little common sense. If you are using a submission service, set the option to stagger your submissions over a longer period of time.
Proof read your articles. If you don't know what this means, look it up! If your writing is riddled with spelling errors, poor structure, punctuation horrors and grammatical butchery, don't be surprised if none of them get published. I could write thousands of words on the most common mistakes seen in people's writing. These usually involve spelling and grammar. Spell check your articles, even if you think you're perfect, you will often be surprised at the mistakes you make. If you tend to misspell a word regularly, you will never correct it unless you make yourself aware of it.
If you are of the opinion that these things don't matter (after all, people will know what you mean!) then think again. If you want to write and, more importantly, see your work published and picked up by other website owners and bloggers, you need to demonstrate an ability to write well.
As an example, all the "SEO experts" who talk about search engine optimisation (sic) but don't even understand that being able to spell their claimed occupation correctly would lend a little more credibility to their claims. Just for the record, most words ending in "ize" use a "z" and not an "s". This is a very common mistake, but it would be corrected by the use of a spell checker, as would so many others.
If you want to write with authority, you have to be able to exhibit basic literacy. Yes, this is important and should be borne in mind by those who eulogize about "the Queen's English", thus making themselves look even more foolish than those they chastise. None of us are perfect and this is not a lecture on grammar and spelling, no matter how needed it might be.
If you are tempted to use PLR articles, even if you rewrite them in an attempt to make them unique, remember that you will be competing with all the other shortcut seekers who are doing the same thing. It's another shortcut to the delete key for a lot of directories.
When it comes to the resource box, it is quite amazing how many authors defeat their entire purpose by making a mess of this vital section. If the article directory in question allows one, two or three live Hyperlinks, make good use of them. Think about your anchor text very carefully. In other words don't say......to find out more click here and Hyperlink the words "click here". The resource box is where you need to give readers a compelling reason to visit your site(s) but it is also the one place you can make the most of good keywords as the anchor text in your links.
Use the resource box wisely and take full advantage of everything the directory is offering you by way of promotional tools. Adding your URL without making it a live link is a pointless waste of time if the directory allows you to use Hyperlinks in your resource box. Conversely, adding more than the quota of permitted links will probably result in deletion of your work.
Another thing to watch is linking directly to affiliate programs. Read the directory's policies on this point or again, you may well find yourself on the cutting room floor. Many directories will stipulate that you may only link to affiliate programs indirectly by referring readers to your own site or domain. Some do not allow straight redirect links either.
Relevancy is also an issue here too. In other words, submitting a PLR piece about gardening and linking to your MLM program is not very helpful or wise, just one more recipe for deletion.
I should finish by saying that yes, you can churn out badly written articles to your heart's content, just don't be surprised at the results.

Timed Response Incentives - this is a fairly classic method of getting a quick response from a customer. The most common places you'll see this will be on shopping channels, with announcers saying something like "order within the next 30 minutes and get a 10% discount". Timed response incentives in business letters should be similar BUT should offer greater leeway for customer response to special promotional discounts. The failure of shopping channel program's approach is that customers feel pressured to buy NOW, which makes them think that all the company wants is their money, period. Promos on sales letters should have a much more relaxed time table, like "We're having a 10% sale all of next week, from 12:00am X date to 12:00pm Y date. Feel free to drop by and look our products over."

What Should They Do Next? - Lastly, customers HATE being left in a lurch if they wind up liking what a product has to offer but get little or no information on how to actually go about buying the product. Always include extensive contact info on the letter that lets them know the fastest and easiest ways to get in touch with you when they want to ask questions or buy something. If you have several contact numbers, try splitting them off into several types as well and include these in the letter, like a "product inquiry" number, another for making personal purchases, another for bulk purchases and/or potential retailers, etc.

So, you think you'd like to start a day care but where to start? Let's assume you know nothing about the industry except that it involves children!!! That's pretty much the position I was in when I started my day care 10 years ago and I spent a year and a half researching and learning before I got going. Before you go running for the hills in dismay allow me to cut short the research time a little with some pointers on how best to prepare for the exciting adventure that is 'Starting a daycare business'.

Your first port of call should be your business plan. Every successful business starts with a well thought out version thus enabling the entrepreneur (you) to get a clear, overall picture of what your business will entail. Many people get to the business plan stage and no further due to a realisation that the project is unfeasible for whatever reason.  Better find out now than after you have ploughed a lot of time and money into starting a business going nowhere.

The business plan covers all vital elements of starting and operating a business - introduction / description, benefits, market research, key financials and conclusion. I found it to be a great 'checklist' of things to do as I worked my way methodically through each of the required steps. It forced me to consider, research and document every aspect of my potential business, propelled me to analyse in detail areas I might otherwise have glossed over (or ignored completely). Like a good teacher it provided the questions and ensured I filled in the blanks. There are many great business plan templates out there and I have listed some that I particularly like below:

Next, talk to the experts. Arrange a meeting with your local licensing representative, have them visit your premises and find out what they will be requiring in terms of premises layout, contents, play area and general health and safety issues. Get them to give you guidelines and tips on policies and paperwork. Don't be afraid to ask questions – remember this is the expert, the person who will be granting you a license so best to have a heads up on what they will expect from you. Prepare in advance of this meeting and come armed with a list of comprehensive questions so you don't waste a great opportunity to absorb as much knowledge as possible.

An invaluable source of information on setting up your day care is existing daycare owners. When I was researching my business I received some of the best tips, hints and advice from other providers, in fact, I still make 'information gathering visits' once a year and learn something new everytime. Call up a couple of established providers (preferably not too close to your proposed venture – they might not be too enamoured of the impending competition!), explain your situation and set up a day to go visit. Most people are delighted to mentor a budding entrepreneur and proud to showcase their business. Become a sponge for that day and absorb every tidbit of information available.

Take a pen and paper for notes, ask questions, listen and observe. Notice daily routines, room layout and equipment, methods for dealing with behaviours, staff and child interaction, health and safety procedures, hygiene practices, peruse paperwork (ask for copies of the paperwork to help guide you when formulating your own). Get tips on advertising, pricing and suppliers. Try to speak with the owner or manager, the staff and the cook and get a feel for each unique role. Ask questions like 'What do you feel could be improved?' or 'If you were starting out what things would you do differently?'. These open questions will provide you with an immense wealth of knowledge, all of the practical, hands on variety.

These are just three steps you can take in pursuit of your dream to start a day care business and they will provide you with a tremendous amount of information and guidance. Your confidence in yourself and your ability to achieve your vision will peak and you will be propelled into further positive action.
